10 Perfect Closing Songs In Rock History
6. Something in the Way - Nirvana
Any classic album should normally have a good flow from one track to the next. Although there might not be a specific story being told throughout the songs, it's nice to at least have a tonal consistency that keeps the listener on their toes when going to each track. After slamming away for the better part of an hour though, Kurt Cobain gave us one of his most haunting songs to close out Nevermind.
While In Utero does also wrap things up nicely on All Apologies, there's a unique spirit in Something in the Way that feels genuinely disturbed. When recording the song itself, Kurt was originally playing in the studio before recording the final track on a couch in the control room while barely whispering the vocals. Building the rest of the song around that performance, that cry of something in the way feels all the more depressing as a result.
You can tell just from his tone of voice that Kurt is really hurting during this song, having had to carry such a heavy load through his life. While we're never told what is actually standing in the way, it's probably for the best that we keep these kind of things hidden. I mean, we all have something in the way to some extent, and this song at least shows us that we have a friend going through the same thing.
