10 Perfect Compilation Albums In Rock Music History

7. Deep Six - SubPop

In the early '80s, most of grunge music didn't really have a name yet. Nirvana was still a far cry from what we would know them as, and the main draws to Seattle were the more arthouse bands like the Melvins. If there's anyone that should be known for truly kickstarting the grunge movement though, it was Sub Pop Records, with this one little album as their calling card.

While Deep Six would probably be called a mixtape these days, bringing together some of Seattle's finest made for one of the best definitions of what constituted grunge. Having some of the sludgier tracks by bands like Skin Yard and the Melvins, you also have the seeds of what would become giants in the music industry, with Soundgarden making their first steps into rock music and Malfunkshun featuring the legendary Andy Wood years before Mother Love Bone had even got started.

Then again, this album was still more of an underground release at the time, which felt more like an album showcase of some of the bands on the roster than anything long term. Looking back on it today, this is the kind of record that has everything that grunge rock is supposed to have. There's melody to be found on here to be sure, but the purpose is to make music that's loud, abrasive, and gives you the feeling like you're walking through mud as you listen to it.
