10 Perfect Debut Rock Albums Of The 90s
4. The Blue Album - Weezer
The beauty behind the alternative revolution came from the fact that nothing was off the table anymore. Since this was a genre created by the outcasts and for the outcasts, it was time for some of the most unlikely of rock stars to come to the forefront. And if we're talking unlikely rock stars, you couldn't have scripted someone less likely than Rivers Cuomo.
Equipped with a guitar and thick rimmed glasses, Rivers turned his nerdy aesthetic into Weezer's greatest strength on the Blue Album, with songs that were all about being a misfit. From the sounds of songs like In the Garage or My Name Is Jonas, these weren't necessarily the kids that were going to be the heartthrobs that graced many a teenager girl's wall. They weren't meant to be either, with Rivers being comfortable writing some of the catchiest songs that he could, and often getting pretty heartfelt on songs like Say It Ain't So and Only In Dreams.
Compared to the basic blue backdrop behind the cover art, there is far more color on display in these tunes than you would think coming from the dorks who sat in the back of class and talked about D&D. But that's the point. You don't have to be a rock star to make it all the time...sometimes it works just to be yourself.
