10 Perfect Folk Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

7. For Emma, Forever Ago - Bon Iver (2007)

This is the sound of cold isolation and the mourning of lost love. It's an album born from heartache despair and longterm illness. During his mid 20s, Justin Vernon contracted pneumonia, leaving him bedridden for several months. During this time he broke up with a longterm girlfriend and was kicked out of his then band. It's enough to make any body drop out of society and become a hermit. And that's exactly what Vernon did.

He shacked up in his father's remote hunting cabin in northern Wisconsin during the winter of 2006, to nurse his wounds. The result was the haunting debut from the musical project Bon Iver. He recorded the album over a three month period in the depths of the winter. You can hear the frostbitten melancholy throughout.

There's the ethereal ambience of The Wolves (Act I and II), which transcends it's folky origins into a crescendo of raw passion. You have the sombre march of Flume which is enough to stop anyone in their tracks. And the heartbreaking, brittle nature of Skinny Love is enough to send anyone into a spiral of bitter reflection.

If you wanted to know what the sonic frequency of a heart breaking is, you can find it on this record.
