10 Perfect Grunge Rock Albums Of The 90s

8. Singles Soundtrack

Considering how much the grunge purists despised the mainstream, how the hell is a movie soundtrack finding its way onto this list? Since you have no one band to even draw from, this feels like the kind of cash in version of grunge that people tried to sell once flannel became a fashion item. And yes, this is where grunge went mainstream, except Cameron Crowe actually knew what he was doing.

Making Singles in Seattle before the alternative rock boom exploded, this entire soundtrack reads like a beginner's course to getting involved in the grunge scene. With a bunch of Seattle bands getting featured roles in the movie, this is the closest that you'd come to finding an official grunge mixtape. Outside of obvious choices like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, you also have more eclectic songs like the Wilson Sisters trying their hand at The Battle of Evermore and throwing on Jimi Hendrix's May This Be Love for the hell of it.

It also doesn't forget where all of these songs come from either, with Paul Westerberg of the Replacements getting some prime spots as a reminder of the college rock scene that happened before grunge really took over the mainstream. If only Nirvana decided to make a cameo on this record, this could have been the one stop shop for all things grunge.
