10 Perfect Hip-Hop Albums With No Bad Songs
4. The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
One of the biggest crimes that any artist can commit is not being convincing to your audience. Any rapper can have a few subpar bars in between the classic lines, but if you're not able to sell your story well enough, you're better off going to the drawing board and starting over again. In terms of Eminem circa 2001 though, you'd better hope that this whole thing was just an act.
After being every mother's worst nightmare on The Slim Shady LP a few years before, this is where we get to see the monster that the first album only hinted at. Compared to the dark humor you would get before, songs like Who Knew? and The Way I Am feel frighteningly real, as if Marshall is about to pop a blood vessel in his brain the more you listen to it. There are even songs like Kim that make you feel almost gross for having been a verbal witness to the song.
As dark as this record is though, you also get to see the man underneath it all. For all of the scary lines he may spew, songs like Stan and Marshall Mathers show the kid all grown up who's trying to make sense of a world that actively hates him. If life hits you like this though, you'd probably want to throw your middle finger in the air right back at them too.
