10 Perfect Hip Hop Music Samples Of Classic Rock Songs

7. Beastie Boys' Jimmy James - Foxy Lady ( Jimi Hendrix)

Beastie Boys established themselves as a bunch of street punks on their first record. On their highly acclaimed second album Paul's Boutique (1989) they became masters of hip hop sampling. Their third studio album Check Your Head (1992) was an eclectic fusing of the two approaches. Like their first album, each member played their own instruments, but there was still plenty of sampled beats and scratching going on - exemplified with with their tribute to Jimi Hendrix "Jimmy James".

The track features no less than six samples from six different Hendrix numbers, with the most prominent being the recognisable feedback wobble from the "Foxy Lady" intro. The sound was used to seamlessly transition into an industrial hip hop beat. The three and half minute track also teases snippets of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", "Third Stone From the Sun" and "Are You Experienced".

Due to some early licensing issues, the group originally released a version which included far viewer of Hendrix's original recordings. When the Hendrix estate finally offered up the goods, however, they rereleased the track as a single, complete with the guitar god's magic.
