10 Perfect Indie Albums Of The 1990s

1. Odelay - Beck

By the time Mellow Gold had hit it big with Loser, Beck seemed to be filling the void that the Talking Heads left back in the '80s. Even though grunge was Generation X's answer to punk rock, Mr. Hansen was the kind of artsy weirdo who was along for the ride as well. After the times of chimpanzees faded, Beck ended up finding his own ass backwards way to the top again with Odelay.

Compared to the rest of the albums on this list, Beck's opus tends to embody everything that makes something indie in the first place. Never for a moment on this record do you feel that this man has to compromise, sprinkling every single warped idea he has and somehow having it work across all of these tracks. It almost feels like some of these songs are without genre, just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

And believe me....some of these things just should not work. Like why the hell would you put something like Where's It At together, complete with a robot voice and classic rock piano intro, on the same album that has a heavy metal opening like Devil's Haircut. That's the beauty of indie though. The rules don't matter...so just shut up and get it done.
