10 Perfect Indie Albums Of The 1990s
2. Definitely Maybe - Oasis
Once the grunge bandwagon started to die off, Creation Records were about to have a phenomenal few years for an indie label. Even though they already had a few bonafied classics under their belt like Screamadelica from Primal Scream, there wasn't that X-factor that gave the world at large any reason to pay attention. Hell, there are some people that are still so starstruck by Oasis that they don't realize they were coming from an indie label.
Before any of the Wonderwall memes were brought out, Definitely Maybe contained the songs that the empire was built on. From the opening clangor of Rock and Roll Star, the age of disaffected irony was dead and we were about to live our glory days all over again, with soon to be classics like Live Forever and Slide Away. Pairing Noel Gallagher's words with his brother Liam's voice made for one of the most brilliant combinations in rock history, like hearing the Beatles if they had gone through their own rebellious punk phase.
Above all else, there isn't an ounce of cynicism in any of these songs, making you feel like you can take on the world every time you throw them on. As much as the end of grunge was a bummer, it wasn't all bad. If these lads from Manchester could put the heart back in rock and roll, you can find your way to the other side as well.
