10 Perfect Metal Albums With Only One Bad Song
9. FX - Black Sabbath
The entire concept of Black Sabbath's music has always been to sound as threatening as possible.
Though there are some bits of beauty across every one of their records, the incarnation of the band with Ozzy Osbourne behind the mic always made you feel like you were walking into some dark pagan ritual, with danger around every corner. So it's only natural to build mood in between tracks...as long as you actually do something.
At first glance, FX is still a decent way to build atmosphere on a Sabbath record, almost being a setup for the song Supernaut. Compared to the usual dark and brooding energy on their other records though, this entire thing feels more like a joke than anything else, with Tony Iommi just messing around with his guitar pedals and carrying on for the entire length of the track.
It's not like Sabbath are strangers to the concept of interlude tracks either, since Master of Reality had songs like Embryo and Orchid to soothe things over before getting back into the heavy stuff. In this case, FX does the exact opposite by making you wonder what the hell's even going on before the album just moves on like nothing happened.
Although it's nice to see Sabbath have a sense of humor by putting in a joke track, it's fair to say that no one comes to Black Sabbath to laugh.
