10 Perfect Metal Albums With Only One Bad Song
7. Sun Arise - Alice Cooper
And speaking of the stone age of heavy metal, we have to draw attention to the man who pretty much invented shock rock.
Although we have to mention people like Screaming Jay Hawkins from way back in the day, it wasn't until Alice Cooper that people started to realize just how far you can go by leaning into the darker side of rock and roll. So on their breakthrough album that introduced them to the world, why the hell did they drop the schtick at the last second?
On its own, Love it to Death is one of the most sinister sounding records of Alice's career, with hit songs like I'm Eighteen standing alongside masterpieces like Black Juju and The Ballad of Dwight Fry. Just as you're sinking down further and further into the underworld though, Alice pulls a 180 with Sun Arise, which is bright and chipper for no good reason.
Being a cover from the writer of children's songs, this entire look feels wrong coming out of Alice's mouth. Even if he was trying to leave the album on a bit of a positive note after the dark subjects, someone like Alice freakin Cooper is not the right person to sell this, almost coming off sarcastic in his delivery.
It's nice to have a change of pace, but if you're pulling us further and further into the darkness, don't try to lift our spirits at the last second.
