10 Perfect Posthumous Rock Albums

1. Blackstar - David Bowie

No matter what period you found him in, David Bowie was always one step ahead of everyone else. Even after a long hiatus in the '00s and many people suspecting that he retired from music, albums like the Next Day showed him going back to his roots and still sounding fresh in his 60s. Little did we know that our days with Bowie were actually numbered.

Though Bowie did indeed live to see the release of Blackstar, his death only a few days later was a lot more somber once we started listening to the tracks. Knowing that he had terminal cancer, this entire album sees Bowie looking back on his life and the impact that he wanted to leave on the world. Although there are some tearjerkers on here like Lazarus, most of the feeling that comes off of this isn't fear of the unknown...it's determination.

You have to remember that Bowie was always reaching into the unknown, so to hear him talk about the effect that he'll have once he's gone and what he can still do with the time he has feels oddly genuine coming from a man at death's door. Bowie knew he didn't need to make this, and to see him actually looking out for his fans says a hell of a lot about the man. Somewhere off in the cosmos, something tells me that our Starman is still proud of this project.
