10 Perfect Power Pop Albums With No Bad Songs

8. Welcome Interstate Managers - Fountains of Wayne

As much as power pop should be a slam dunk for mainstream success, it doesn't always work out like that. Sometimes you either come off as a little too edgy to make it on pop radio and yet not be able to find your way onto the rock stations because you don't have the right amount of bite as the rest of the pack. If you toe the line just right though, you actually can have a surprisingly long shelf life.

While Fountains of Wayne never reached the same levels as someone like The White Stripes from around the same time, their knack for hooks has left a far greater impression on the rock scene than most people realize. If all that you know from this album is the song Stacy's Mom, you need to take the real deep dive into the album tracks, which give you a better picture of the retro leaning styles that they go for.

On half of these songs, you get the impression that this is just a solid pop rock band from back in the '70s that somehow never managed to surface until the '00s, especially with breezy songs like Hey Julie going down very smoothly. Though the charts may have passed them by, if you look at the music that the modern acts like 5 Seconds of Summer were making when they started out, it sounded a lot closer to something like this. Whether that's a blessing or a curse is up for you to decide though.
