10 Perfect Power Pop Albums With No Bad Songs
7. Paramore - Paramore
Ever since the days of Riot!, Paramore has always been on a bit of a poppier trajectory. Although there were definitely some moments of crunch back in the early days, each passing record has shown them dipping their toes into more poppy territory, until After Laughter put them squarely in the pop rock camp. Before they went full on pop though, their self titled record had a lot more attitude behind it.
Make no mistake, there are still some songs on here that could just fit as regular pop songs like Ain't It Fun, but the rest of the album does a great job at balancing what the band is capable of. Being a three piece at this point, you get to see Hayley Williams really stepping up as a songwriter on this one, whether it's on the sentimental ballads or blasting your eardrums on the heavier cuts like Now.
This is by no means a Hayley Williams solo outing though, and the team of Taylor York and Jeremy Davis are absolute monsters behind these tracks, knowing just when to break out the more commercial material and when to make riffs that wouldn't feel out of place in a traditional punk outfit. While the remnants of punk would be stripped out of the band's DNA in the next few years, this serves as a nice showcase of everyone in the band can do.
