10 Perfect Punk Albums That Changed Rock Music History

7. Blink-182: Enema Of The State (1999)

Before the music elite comes a knocking, hear me out. Kurt Cobain once said "Punk rock should mean freedom," if that's true, then Blink-182 should be commended for their ridiculously silly, but highly enjoyable take on punk.

Although they'd been praised on the indie and underground scenes, critics ridiculed Blink's whole approach to the genre. With their third studio album they were accused of turning the whole pop punk-thing into a vapid, commercial joke.

They were seen as undermining everything Green Day had done on Dookie, with b-hole jokes, and juvenile musings of lust. The singing sounded like a group of bratty adolescents, droning on about how suburban life sucks; And every reference to romance was executed with all the sophistication of the American Pie movies. If it wasn't a parody, surely this sh*t was just tone deaf?

But that's the same kind of rigid conservative mindset, punk set out to dismantle in the first place. Sure Blink weren't obeying the conventions of punk, and even mocking it to a degree, but that was punk's whole shtick. It's time to stop dismissing this record as a nostalgic guilty pleasure - this s**t is simply great.
