10 Perfect Punk Albums That Changed Rock Music History
3. The Sex Pistols: Never Mind The !*$%, Here's The Sex Pistols (1977)
Although this record ultimately came to represent just how momentary the punk movement was, it nevertheless stands as one of the greatest political statements in music history. The Sex Pistols might have only given us one album, but it contained everything they needed to say.
This was a time when Britain was a bleak place. Unemployment was at an all time high, the cost of living was becoming insurmountable; litter covered the streets of London, and the future seemed hopeless - sounds eerily familiar, right?
The rising frustration felt by the general public, was encapsulated in 38 minutes of viscously scolding punk rock. It shocked, entertained and down right panicked people. When the Pistols denounced the monarchy, and proclaimed anarchy as a viable alternative to the current establishment, rock was given a new purpose.
There was nothing forced or contrived about this album, it hit hard because the emotion behind it was real. This was before punk was purely an image; you could rip your jeans, and shove a safety pin through your ear, but you were never going to embody the same f*ck-the-system attitude as Johnny Rotten and the Pistols.
