10 Perfect Rock Albums For Pop Fans
9. #1 Record - Big Star
When rock music was becoming one of the biggest pop culture movements in the world, there was also a little genre called power pop rearing its head as well. In between the likes of Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith that were cleaning up the charts at the time with their riff based form of rock and roll, there were also bands like Cheap Trick coming out of the fray, bringing with them the same intensity but with pop choruses to back them up. Before we got to hear the likes of Surrender or I Want You To Want Me though, Big Star actually beat them to the punch a little bit earlier.
Although these Tennessee natives never exactly set the world on fire or anything with their debut, that pretentious title actually holds a little bit of water among the underground pop rock scene. Much like other pop acts of their time, both Alex Chilton and Chris Bell had a bit of a fixation with the '60s era of pop rock and weren't afraid to show it, like the Ballad of El Goodo treading dangerously close to full on Beatles territory.
There is some teeth to be found on this record though, but you have to dig a little deeper to find it, with songs like Don't Lie To Me and In the Street being juxtaposed with tracks like Watch the Sunrise or Thirteen. This isn't your meat and potatoes rock and roll by any stretch, but there's nothing wrong with having a sweet tooth every now and again either.
