10 Perfect Rock Albums For Pop Fans
7. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
From his humble beginnings until now, Elton John never really felt like he fit into the mold of being a rock star. Alongside other acts of his time like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, there was no reason to believe that a guy dressing up in wild outfits and playing wild music from behind a piano was going to have a shot at hitting the big time. By the mid '70s though, Elton had become the resident queen of rock and roll, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is royalty reaching the throne.
After a few years of making one hit album after another, a nightmarish experience that Elton and his band had trying to record in Jamaica made for them feeling much more at ease making this record. While never originally intended as a double record, the amount of great material was too much to fit onto one disc, going from the Motown styles of Bennie and the Jets to taking a night out on the town with Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.
Despite it being a pop release that goes on for well over an hour, there is barely any fluff to be seen on here either, with songs that take you on long journeys and make for beautiful stories, like the tortured soul of Sweet Painted Lady to Bernie Taupin pining for nostalgia on the title track and Roy Rogers. Elton still had a long way up from here, but anyone who comes to him for his masterpieces won't find any skips on here.
