10 Perfect Rock Albums For Production
3. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
It practically takes a small miracle for any album to get made properly. When you have a shoestring budget most of the time, you have to deal with creating some sort of magic whenever you step up to the microphone, and somehow have the right song with the right singer along the line. Even when you do have the budget for these blockbuster albums though, Rumours feels like it shouldn’t have been possible to be made this well.
Despite the production hazards, all of the band members were already at each others’ throats, both couples going through major separations while also being out of their minds on drugs in their downtime. Putting their differences aside though, every single song on this record is polished to an absolute sheen, balancing every single genre well and making each instrument pop out of the mix.
You can see a song like the Chain or Dreams as good songs by themselves, but you’re in for a treat actually peeling back the layers of sound, like the juicy keyboard parts from Christine McVie or hearing Lindsey Buckingham’s fingers moving across the strings of his guitar. The magic wasn’t lost on any of the audio nerds back in the day either, with most people playing this album as a way to demonstrate how well music could sound when played out of speakers. We were already exploring what genres could do in the late ‘70s, but Rumours feels the culmination of what can be done with a few good songs and some of the best producers in the business.
