10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The 1980s
5. Synchronicity - The Police
The entire career trajectory of the Police almost feels like a happy accident. Considering the disparate backgrounds that every one of these musicians came from, it's a miracle that we got at least one record as good as it was, let alone 5. When they started to reach the end though, we started to see just how far their music was able to reach on Synchronicity.
From their punk beginnings on the album Outlandos D'Amour, this was the moment where Sting finally achieved the peak of his songwriting powers, with songs like Every Breath You Take and Wrapped Around Your Finger being some of the greatest pop singles of the decade. It didn't skimp out on the more cerebral stuff either, with the two title tracks being a strange musical journey in and of themselves.
Granted, there are always those little blips on the radar, like Andy Summer's ode to child abuse on Mother, that tend to bring down the rest of the record by comparison. Then again, those are the moments that almost serve the album's flow a lot better, almost making you appreciate the glowing parts of the record even more. So we have keyboards out the wazoo...some of the greatest pop singles of all time...and some cheesy moments added in for good measure. Yeah....this album pretty much is the 80s in a nutshell.
