10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The '70s
3. Toys in the Attic - Aerosmith
How have we gone almost this entire list and not once brought up the heavy helping of blues rock that the '70s spat out? Compared to what the prog rock scene was up to around the same time, a slew of rock bands were following in the tradition of people like Muddy Waters virtually overnight, with everyone from Humble Pie to Grand Funk Railroad having a shot at the mainstream. When it comes to the overall tone of the blues though, Aerosmith pioneered the way forward with a healthy dose of boogie.
After coming off of their sophomore release Get Your Wings, the band had been around the block a couple times and knew what suited their sound going forward. What we were treated to here was basically the Stones by way of Led Zeppelin, with songs that had the same bluesy foundation but with a heavy dose of thunder.
Just listening to the opening track alone would be enough to get someone hooked on Aerosmith immediately, taking the basic blues foundation that everyone learns as a kid and lights it up to epic proportions. While Aerosmith has come under intense scrutiny for slowing down to a halt in recent years, this is the kind of music that still hits with the force of a freight train.
