10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The '90s
8. Weezer - Weezer
The '90s were always a prime time for the misfits to get a say in the rock genre. As much as the dominating sounds of hair metal reigned supreme a few years earlier, the alternative nation made it okay for someone who didn't look the part become a star. Hell, even when we gave the nerds a say in things, they came through with one of the greatest power pop albums ever made.
Being somewhere between the pop punk invasion and the sad sack loners in the back of the classroom, Weezer's self titled album is probably the closest to bubblegum pop that we would see in the '90s rock scene. For a band that was all about playing up their dorky personas, there are some genuine rock chops on here, with Rivers Cuomo pulling off some decent solos on tracks like In the Garage and the closer Only in Dreams.
Thanks to the production help from former Cars singer Ric Ocasek, the entire album has a pristine sheen, almost feeling like it's a classic from the '70s AM rock genre that you somehow never got around to hearing. In an era that was supposed to be all downtrodden, it's sometimes nice to get a palette cleanser with an album that has its heart on its sleeve.
