10 Perfect Rock Albums That Critics Got Wrong
9. Purple - Stone Temple Pilots
At the start of the '90s, everything was thrown for a loop by the time that grunge started to gain prominence. Here was a niche music scene that was coming out of Seattle that somehow managed to get the entire world paying attention to it, with lower tier acts like Mudhoney and the Melvins getting a ton of buzz around them. When you have that kind of microscope on you, some fans can gatekeep more than others.
So when you had a band from California try on some alternative aesthetics, fans were beyond pissed that they were copying their signature sound. And you're not that far off the mark, considering Stone Temple Pilots do have a certain style that would fit right in with the alternative crowd. If you actually listen to the music though, Purple has the chops to back it up, with Interstate Love Song being one of the greatest tracks of the '90s.
The magic doesn't just begin and end at that song though, with tracks like Meatplow having an alt-rock by way of the Doors swagger and Dean DeLeo taking a few cues from the jazz world with some of the chords that he picks. While this record isn't going to debunk something like Pearl Jam's Ten in your record collection, the magic of '90s rock is still here in spades.
