10 Perfect Rock Albums That Critics Got Wrong

8. Alive! - KISS

For most critics, you're going to want something a little safe to comment on every now and again. If you have someone who's practically a carbon copy of the same sound you've heard over the years, it's easier to hype them up than venture into the unknown. Because if you do decide to cover something a little out there, chances are the public is going to tear you to shreds.

And nowhere is this more evident for KISS' glory years in the '70s, where they were seen as the cartoon kid-friendly version of what rock and roll was supposed to be. Even when they decided to pull out the big guns for albums like Alive!, some of the more snooty rock fans had their reservations, refusing to endorse a band that thought makeup and crazy outfits were the path to success in rock and roll.

Then again, KISS never was a critics band to begin with. One of the biggest draws that made them so good in the first place was just how much they were willing to go against the status quo and give every audience member the time of their lives when they bought a ticket to their show. Are they the best musicians? Even they wouldn't say that, but you have to respect how much they were willing to go to make their rock and roll dynasty happen.
