10 Perfect Rock Albums That Critics Got Wrong
6. Sam's Town - The Killers
Critics can always be a bit savage when they see a few red flags for an album. Either there's a production issue that they can tear to shreds, or they can just look at the lyrics of one of the songs and decide that this musician is one of the worst wordsmiths they have ever heard. In the case of the Killers though, you won't find a quicker instance of the critics turning their back on a band.
You have to remember that Hot Fuss was absolutely massive at the time, with the signature '80s throwback sound that the Las Vegas act did so well. When they came up with the heartland rock of Sam's Town though, critics were ready to rip this album apart before they had even heard it. When doing press for the album, Brandon Flowers began to talk up the record like it was one of the best albums of the decade.
So naturally you had people going into this album with the mentality of "well, how good can it be?," which led to people getting upset when the songs didn't set the world on fire like Mr. Brightside. Not many records can do that though, and the strength of Sam's Town is how down-to-Earth it feels compared to their first album. And as time has gone on, critics have started to change their tune yet again, calling this album one of the most underrated projects of the '00s.
