10 Perfect Rock Albums That Critics Got Wrong

4. OK Computer - Radiohead

Not every critic has to necessarily come from a music magazine. Although we like to antagonize people at sites like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, the real people who like to slog our favourite artists usually are a lot closer to the artists in question. If you're looking for the true harshest critics, all you have to do is look at the record labels that they've signed to.

When Radiohead were first starting to put out their material, EMI really were in the market for anything that remotely resembled alternative rock, which is what made Creep the most polarizing song in their catalogue for hardcore fans. Once they got their road stripes on The Bends though, their masterpiece album OK Computer was right at their feet, and was then met with indifference by most of the label.

In fact, the label had so little faith in this record that they initially thought it was going to be a flop and adjusted their sales predictions just in case it would be a bomb. And it's not shocking for someone to think that a song like Paranoid Android wouldn't get on the radio, with its six-minute episodic song length and different movements throughout. Then again, a lot of listeners tend to have broader tastes than you think, and OK Computer hasn't just become a good record. This might hold the title of one of the most important records of the '90s behind Nirvana's Nevermind.
