10 Perfect Rock Albums That Everyone Hated Making

3. Iowa - Slipknot

For a band that dresses in masks and matching boiler suits every time they take to the stage, you can expect that not every Slipknot album is going to be sunshine and roses. As they started to taste success after their debut though, the band could feel some tense energy running throughout their ranks, including many of the band members getting more and more out of their mind on substances. This should have been a recipe for disaster, and you could argue that was exactly what we got on Iowa.

Throughout every one of the album sessions at Sound City, no one was in a very good headspace, either struggling with their own demons or not getting on the same creative page as their bandmates. Having a producer like Ross Robinson didn't help matters either, with an aggressive work aesthetic that included throwing potted plants at the band and even one incident when Clown had hot wax smeared across his face before completing a take.

Although the whole thing sounds like Hell on Earth, the result was one of the heaviest metal records ever made, as the band amplified every single disturbing aspect of the debut and pushed it that much further. While the actual members might not like to reminisce on these days that often, every metalhead has left this album with a thrashing they wouldn't soon forget.
