10 Perfect Rock Debut Albums Of The 2000s
9. Parachutes - Coldplay
Over the years, Coldplay have really toyed with the idea of even being a rock band anymore. Ever since the days of Viva La Vida, Chris Martin sounded like he was more suited to the pop centric focus of the band's music than the actual piano ballads. So when you end up taking a look back to Parachutes, you'd be surprised to see Coldplay as a fairly raw band in the early days.
Coming off of the back of the Britpop movement, this is the kind of introspective music that got many people hooked on Chris Martin's voice, which absolutely soars on the lead single Yellow. Even though that's the one track that everyone remembers from this record, the real meat of this album lies in just how dark it is for Coldplay, with songs like Spies and High Speed tapping into something that would normally be reserved for a Radiohead record.
In fact, since Radiohead didn't even want to be Radiohead around this time on Kid A, this is probably where a lot of the jaded fans who loved the emotion of Thom Yorke's voice found themselves. Most of all though, Parachutes is much more subdued than the rest of its competition on the charts. For all the nu metal and pop punk that was around at the time, it's nice to have an album that just feels like a warm hug.
