10 Perfect Rock Frontmen Of The 90s
5. Zack de la Rocha - Rage Against the Machine
Then again, not every frontman has to be the most technically gifted singer of all time. Most of the time, it has to come down to how gifted you are at keeping the audience on their toes and making sure that you're getting the best performance out of the entire band with you upfront. For Zack de la Rocha, playing in Rage Against the Machine wasn't just about performance...it was about life and death.
Arriving on the scene out of nowhere in 1992, Rage's self titled debut record is still the blueprint for how well rock and hip hop could blend, as Zack's furious lyrics led the charge. Though Tom Morello's guitar chops were enough to keep rockers attuned to the song, the real message always came from Zack, who had a lot to say about the sad state of America at the time, from racist police practices to having certain elements of freedom stripped away from you day after day.
When you listen to Zack's voice on the record, you can't really call him a singer or a rapper though. It's more like this man is a vocal performer that's looking to make you move just through how impassioned he is for his cause. Even if you don't have the same views as someone like Zack 100% of the time, any man this committed to his ideals is enough to make you want to stand up for injustice as well.
