10 Perfect Rock Music Songs Of The 2010s

4. Square Hammer - Ghost

Ghost may not be the heirs to the heavier, darker side of rock, as was their reputation for the first few albums of their career, but boy howdy if they didn't come out with some stone-cold anthems in the 2010s, and none more foot-stompingly infectious than Square Hammer.

Appearing on their Popestar EP (2016), alongside four gothic covers of primarily-1980s pop songs, the song peaked at No.1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in early 2017, making Ghost the first Swedish band ever to top the chart. Needless to say, Square Hammer represents their biggest hit to date, with some 100-million views between its two YouTube video uploads, 100 million streams on Spotify, and a penetration of the mainstream rock and pop consciousness quite unlike the music of any other masked band. And it's not hard to see why.

Opening with a delicious guitar line, it does precisely what a good hook is supposed to do, hooking you on the first listen. The track fuses an '80s rock sound with shades of modern hard rock and metal, leading to a catchy chorus laced with masonic imagery -- fitting with the overall style and approach of the band, who like nothing better than to build their lyrical themes around religions and secret societies. Plus, there's a lush guitar solo, there's an organ; there's everything you need.
