10 Perfect Rock Music Songs Of The 2010s

5. Disillusioned - A Perfect Circle

Eat the Elephant (2018), A Perfect Circle's long-anticipated (like, a decade and a half long) fourth album, split fans down the middle, disappointing those looking for more of the same sound from the band's earlier output, and offering an exciting new avenue of sound for those willing to continue down the rabbit hole. The latter group were rewarded by a collection of sonically nuanced tracks that refused to play in either the band or the genre's established boundaries.

Perhaps best of all is Disillusioned, the record's second track and a caustic warning from singer Maynard James Keenan about the impending damages of society's over-obsession with technology, paired with a Black Mirror-style music video. A throbbing, atmospheric piece of musical experimentation, the song marries piano with the traditional rock set up, and moves between this; spare, piano-led interludes; and cinematic crescendos of keening guitars and cymbals.

Unlike Puscifer, A Perfect Circle have never really had to live in the shadow of Tool, despite Keenan fronting them both. This may be due to the fact that APC is very much a collaboration between lyricist/singer Keenan and guitarist/composer Billy Howerdel, and that their sound tends to be distinctive enough from Tool as to not draw so many comparisons. In any case, the band have a sizeable following that almost guarantees they will continue surprising us with innovative, masterful rock tracks like this for years to come.
