10 Perfect Rock Music Songs That Were Inspired By The Beatles
8. Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen
Whenever people bring up the Beatles' iconic sound, they normally go immediately to their psychedelic period. The era of Sgt. Peppers is always seen as the culmination of everything the band had worked for, and most of the copycats tend to take the crux of songs like Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds or I Am The Walrus and try to capture the same vibe. The Beatles were still a rock and roll band before they got into the studio, and Queen served up something that sounded like it could have been sung by John Lennon back in the Cavern Club.
Looking to initially imitate Elvis Presley when writing this song, Crazy Little Thing Called Love ends up sounding like a relic from the days of With the Beatles, where the Fab Four were first starting to get a handle on what they could do, while still wearing their love of Motown and old school rock and roll on their sleeves. Although bands like the Stray Cats may have been making their signature brand of rockabilly around the same time as well, Queen seems to be going for a different kind of retro feel, with Freddie Mercury even adding a hiccup in his voice that John Lennon's idol Buddy Holly had worked out in his prime.
Queen had already proven themselves as worthy hitmakers in their own right though, and a song like this feels like a little nod to some of their heroes that help shape them into the musicians that they are today. It might just be a short little rocker about being in love, but John did say that that was all we needed all the way back in the day.
