10 Perfect Rock Singles Released In Summer

1. T. Rex: Get It On (1971)

Along with David Bowie, Marc Bolan is often considered a leading pioneer of glam rock. Like Bowie he also spent the '60s as a relative unknown in the music industry, releasing a string of unsuccessful singles and performing in a number of semi-popular groups. By the '70's Bolen and his new band T.Rex was experiencing a wild surge in popularity, beating Bowie's Ziggy Stardust character to the punch by almost two years.

"Get It On" was the moment classic rock 'n' roll met glam. Marc Bolan had originally wanted to record a cover of the Chuck Berry number "Little Queenie" but his initial efforts ended up being something quite different.

He lifted the Chuck Berry guitar riff and transposed the basic sung structure into a sparkly glam rock number, with boogie-woogie piano courtesy of Rick Wakeman. The irresistible dance-inducing melody coupled with Bolan's sensual vocal delivery and suggestive lyrics made it an instant number one hit.

Dropping in the summer of 1971, it remains one of the greatest glam rock tracks ever written.
