10 Perfect Rock Songs That Are Ridiculously Long
7. Hey Jude - The Beatles
After abandoning the road for good in the mid '60s, the back half of the Beatles' career made for one hell of a ride. Spending almost every day in Abbey Road Studios, The Fab Four led the back half of the '60s into new and interesting directions, from psychedelia on Sgt. Peppers to tackling almost everything under the sun on the White Album. Just before taking a break to practice meditation in India, Paul McCartney gave us one of his greatest singalongs.
Framed as a letter of reassurance to John Lennon's son Julian, this entire song is like Uncle Paul telling you that everything is going to be okay, as you try to take your own sad songs and make them better. While we had gotten used to Paul's ballads ever since the days of A Hard Day's Night, the real star of this show doesn't even belong to him, as the entire back half of the song is a grand singalong for everyone to join in with.
Seeing how they already had an orchestra at their disposal, the outro of this song is nearly longer than the song itself, as people go along with the "na-na-nas" while Paul tries to split his throat apart when he goes for his adlibs. When asked about having to trim it for the radio cut, John Lennon had the perfect retort to the naysayers. The radio wouldn't play a 7 minute song, but "they will if it's us."
