10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Inspired From Another Band
1. Cigarettes and Alcohol - Oasis
There are so many Oasis songs that have been inspired by classics that they could practically fill up their own list. Though most people point to bands like the Beatles being the prime example of Noel Gallagher's borrowing of motifs, everyone from Neil Innis to Stevie Wonder have been the victim of Noel's pen, taking their initial ideas and turning them into Britpop bliss. The most obvious example though is one that Noel didn't even try to hide from the moment he started.
On Definitely Maybe, you can hear a lot of different ideas coming through in every song, but Cigarettes and Alcohol has had a long history in glam rock before it got to Manchester. When Noel first started to come up with the initial riff of the song, rhythm guitarist Bonehead had many reservations about playing the tune, knowing that it was the exact same riff as T. Rex's Bang a Gong.
Not wanting to be outdone though, Noel carried on as is, writing a song that stripped the flashy rock and roll of the '70s and traded it in for the emerging Britpop movement that was slowly starting to take over in Britain. Marc Bolan's estate may have had some thoughts about this song being used, but to borrow a line from the song itself, is it really worth the aggravation?
