10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Never Released As Singles
3. Bullet the Blue Sky - U2
It makes sense why U2 has developed the reputation as a difficult band for some people to get into. Though their utopian ideals might be inspiring for some people, there's a good chance half of their potential fans took one look at Bono's practices and thought he was the most pretentious frontman who ever lived. While some of them may have a point, you can't say that they weren't devoted to their cause on songs like Bullet the Blue Sky.
Coming right after the more optimistic side of the Joshua Tree, this is where things really start to take a dark turn, with the steady drumming of Larry Mullen Jr. almost sounding like war drums playing in the background. As the rest of the band comes in, Bono starts to call out the US's modern foreign policy practices, which has managed to have a dire effect on Central American countries as the years go on.
Once the song really gets going, you can feel the sonic walls closing in around you, as Bono uses the back half of the song to almost take on the role of one of these shady businessmen in Washington, ignoring all of the horrors that are going on in lieu of just watching all of the money stack up in front of him. There have been many U2 political songs before and after this, but the subject matter has never sounded more heavy than this. Forget the optimism...this sounds apocalyptic.
