10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Written By Accident
5. Columbia - Oasis
Oasis have never exactly been shy about wearing their influences on their sleeve. Hell, you could argue that the band could have easily just made a career off of ripping from their favorite artists, whether it's the homage to T Rex on Cigarettes and Alcohol or cribbing from Stevie Wonder on Uptight. Of all the tracks on Definitely Maybe, Columbia seemed to be in the clear, until you peel back the layers of the song.
Around the time that the band were cutting their teeth on the streets of Manchester, they were used to reinterpreting different dance songs, one of which was Tortuga, written by house DJ Alex Neri. Since none of the rockers in the clubs knew that though, the band decided to use it as the opener for a lot of their sets, being just a short instrumental for Liam to walk onstage to.
When they started showing the song to their friends though, they were encouraged to write some words to the track, thinking that it was just a goof around live jam that they were working on. So Noel set about structuring the song like a standard Oasis tune and in between the cracks, the idea of it being a cover song was thrown out the window. You could call it plagiarism, but if you tweak it just enough, you can hit upon something that you could call original.
