10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Written By Someone Else
1. Badge - Cream
Of all of the accolades that Eric Clapton had at the beginning of his career, songwriter was not one of them. Despite all of the news going around England proclaiming him as a god of the guitar, he was never concerned with writing material of his own, playing his bluesy covers and even Cream's Sunshine Of Your Love being cowritten by the poet Peter Brown before being handed off to the rest of the band. Towards the end of the '60s, Eric had gotten help from one of his best friends, who was slowly turning into one of the best writers in the business.
In the wake of the Beatles' breaking up, George Harrison had returned the favor for Eric contributing licks to his song While My Guitar Gently Weeps by volunteering to write a single for them. Granted, it's not like George was looking to give them something as good as Here Comes the Sun or anything, using a few licks that he had lying around as well as a few lyrical ideas from Ringo Starr, who offered up the line about swans in the park.
While Badge became one of the most celebrated songs that Cream ever had, even the title of the track was a bit of a fluke, with Eric looking over at the rough draft of the song and mistaking George's handwriting for the word 'badge' when he wrote the bridge of the song. For most of the Summer of Love though, this was a magical time for rock music, and sometimes the best songs in the world can come together by some happy accidents.
