10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Written By Someone Else
2. Boris the Spider - The Who
As the Who were first cutting their teeth as part of the Mod rock scene, Pete Townshend was getting more in tune with how to write songs properly. Even though he didn't fashion himself as a rock star in any capacity, his way with words and faith in his art led to some of the greatest songs the Who ever made, from the cacophony of My Generation to the entire experience of Won't Get Fooled Again. In the early days though, the Who was a democracy, and the album credits wanted them to reflect that as well.
On the album A Quick One, the band were pushed to write songs on their own and share an equal cut in the songwriting royalties, which made for a fairly uneven record when you put a song like Keith Moon's Cobwebs and Strange next to Townshend's title track. One thing this did give us though was the more unique stylings of John Entwistle's songwriting. Having a much lower tone than the others as well as having formal musical training, his first steps as a songwriter are bone chilling on Boris the Spider, painting the picture of a spider crawling up the wall.
Even though the sound of this is more macabre than downright scary, you do feel a bit on edge whenever the song plays, especially when John reaches deep into his low register for the chorus line. This may have been done for laughs or just to get one decent song on the record, but John Entwistle may have pioneered the idea of growling in hard rock music without even trying.
