10 Perfect Rock Songs Written At The Last Second
4. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
At the end of the '80s, Hysteria by Def Leppard was quickly turning into one of the most expensive records to ever come out of the UK. Much like their heroes Queen, the band were never satisfied with just playing the bare minimum, working with Mutt Lange to make sure every vocal harmony was perfect and every guitar chord hit at the exact right time. After constant delays of the album and pushing back deadlines though, the band writing a new song on the spot wasn't really what the record company wanted to hear.
During the final tracking sessions for the album, Joe Elliott was knocking around ideas with his acoustic guitar before singing the main chorus of Pour Some Sugar On Me, which Lange fell in love with when he heard it coming out of a coffee break. Knowing they had already gone through way too much studio time, the band knew they had to work fast, coming out with the rest of the lyrics by deciphering words that they had said when they were messing around with dictaphones on separate ends of the control room, with Joe singling out the line "love is like a bomb" and going from there.
Then again, you won't have much luck getting to the crux of what the song is actually about though, with Elliott being a bit cagey about its meaning before admitting that he wasn't really paying attention to the rhyme or reason behind some of his double entendres. Seeing how it became one of the biggest songs that the band would ever have, it was definitely worth the record company waiting just a little bit longer.
