10 Perfect Rock Songs Written At The Last Second

5. Murder By Numbers - The Police

The entire fallout of the Police wasn't about the band members hating each other...it was about being realistic. Although there was definitely some creative tension that had come between the power trio over the past few years, their rising fame became too much of a hassle for them to handle, thinking it would be better just to close up shop rather than try to outdo what they had already done. Midway through the sessions though, the band had one little bit of magic hiding in between Andy Summers' guitar chords.

Being a fan of jazz, Andy had been working out intricate chords on his guitar when Sting thought that he had lyrics that could fit the chords, which turned into Murder by Numbers. Being thrown on the B-side of Every Breath You Take, this may be one of the strangest Police tunes that they have ever made, always taking place on the off beat and Sting painting abstract pictures about being able to turn murderous deeds into a form of artistic expression.

There are even a few times where even the band seems a little bit confused about where the song should go, with the recording being done live and Stewart Copeland actually losing his place halfway through the intro and Sting even having a few out of tune notes on his stand up bass halfway through the tune. Then again, it's songs like these that give you perspective on why the Police broke up. The chemistry was definitely still there, but their tastes seemed to go beyond what just the three of them were capable of.
