10 Perfect Songs On Terrible Albums
3. Frantic - Metallica
The entire mission that Metallica had behind St. Anger was to make something that was closer to raw aggression, and the fans have never forgiven them for it. Despite fans being more and more fed up with the guys making more pop centric songs on albums like Load and ReLoad, seeing them go in the exact opposite direction so quickly made for an unlistenable piece of trash, with Lars Ulrich's drums sounding like literal garbage on every track. For the first track though, things seemed to be going pretty well.
Granted, one of the main reasons why people defend something like Frantic is because it's just the introduction to the chaos that's about to unfold on the rest of the album. That really sells the song short though, with riffs that are a lot more gutteral than what we have heard on the past few Metallica releases and the quiet/loud dynamics actually working well for this kind of style.
While James Hetfield's lyrics on this record do seem to be hit or miss depending on what song you're listening to, hearing him come to grips with his addiction problems on a song like this is fairly compelling, searching for something more to keep you satisfied until you drive yourself crazy trying to fill the void. This is far from the best of Metallica's catalog, but if the rest of St. Anger were like this, fans probably wouldn't be nearly as upset.
