10 Perfect Songs On Terrible Albums
2. Shackler's Revenge - Guns N Roses
One of the biggest crimes that you can make in the world of rock is having too many anticipation. Even though keeping fans in the dark on some parts of your creative process is good to keep them excited for what comes next, leaving them yearning for more and more can become toxic pretty quickly. Waiting means getting expectations, and when they stack up skyscraper high, there was no way Axl Rose was going to be able to match them.
After having every other member of Guns N Roses leave during the mid '90s, Axl finally stepped up to the plate with Chinese Democracy in 2008, with songs that sounded like a complete mess when you actually heard them. In between some of the more Frankenstein-d songs, Shackler's Revenge is actually the closest that the album comes to the gritty sound of Guns N Roses that most people were waiting for. With the addition of new guitarists Bumblefoot and Buckethead, hearing them play off each other alongside Axl's wail is exactly fairly compelling.
Though hearing a Guns N Roses album without Slash behind the six string is certainly disheartening, Axl actually seems to show up on this song, not as savage as he was in the Appetite days but no less pissed off. There's a good chance that nothing could have lived up to Chinese Democracy's expectations, but this at least felt like a step in the right direction.
