10 Perfect Songs That Had To Wait Years To Become Hits
3. Yesterday - The Beatles
For all of the boy band comparisons people like to make these days, there was never a moment in the Beatles' career where they weren't authentically rock and roll. These guys still cited people like Chuck Berry and Little Richard among their all time favorite artists, and every ballad that they would put on their records were always brought to life using the guitar and drums setup that rock and roll was known for. There was always something a little more sophisticated on the horizon though, and the band touched on something much more profound thanks to Paul McCartney's dreams.
When drifting out of bed one morning, Paul had the beginnings of a tune in his head, immediately going over to the piano and working out the chords to make sure he remembered it. While he originally thought it was just an old jazz standard, what he hit on was all his, using the placeholder lyrics Scrambled Eggs until the word Yesterday fell into his head during a break from the Beatles sessions.
Even though Paul could have easily thrown this on any Beatles record in 1963, he originally held off on doing it, thinking it was a bit odd for a rock and roll band to be playing something this spare and acoustic. It might have been about keeping a certain image together at the time, but there are still professional songwriters who are trying to figure out how to match this kind of melancholy.
