10 Perfect Songs That Had To Wait Years To Become Hits

4. You Know You're Right - Nirvana

Towards the end of 1993, the next few months of Nirvana's existence were looking really dark. Kurt Cobain already had reservations with going on a stadium tour to promote In Utero, and some of the initial runs ended up getting derailed with Kurt junking himself up on heroin whenever he was off stage. Somewhere amid the mayhem though, the band ducked into Robert Lang Studios to jam, and walked out with one of the most haunting songs of their career.

Although You Know You're Right was intended for the group's new album, Kurt would be dead in just a few months, taking his own life in April of 1994 and leaving a huge hole in the musical community. Everything revolving around the band ended at that point, with Dave Grohl putting together the Foo Fighters in the next few years, but those tapes were still always in the vault, waiting to have their moment in the sun. After putting together some greatest hits for a compilation record, the band went back to You Know You're Right and gave us the first new Nirvana song in years, which almost felt metallic in construction.

If In Utero was the reaction to the kind of the fame that the band were up against at the time, this song is the peek behind the curtain where Kurt is completely vulnerable, almost sounding on the verge of a panic attack in some sections before building his voice back up to give us a huge scream on the choruses. This may have been the last official Nirvana song that was ever recorded, but hearing Kurt's voice on the radio after so long almost felt like listening to ghosts from the past.
