10 Perfect Supergroups In Rock History
1. The Traveling Wilburys
Some of the best supergroups in the world tend to come together because of just how lucrative the payday would be. As cynical as it sounds, the business side of the music industry is what pays the bills, and sometimes the biggest acts in the world start to realize how much bigger they can be if they have some real star power behind their new group. For all of the more money hungry groups that have come and gone, The Traveling Wilburys ended up forming almost completely by accident.
When George Harrison was asked to write a B-side for one of his singles, he enlisted the help of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne to help him with it, while using Bob Dylan's studio and Roy Orbison giving a surprise appearance on vocals. Once he finished the song though, the label thought it was too good to be thrown on the B-side to a single, so the band set out to make a whole album of tunes together. While the Wilburys was always meant to be a fun experiment, you can really hear the band having fun making this record, like the amazing vocal showcase for Roy on Not Alone Any More and everyone trading off round robin style on the closer End of the Line.
The death of Roy may have stopped the Wilburys in their tracks and led to only one more record, but that doesn't tarnish the music here, putting some of the biggest icons of the '60s back on top of the charts in their middle age. This may be the peak example of dad rock, but just because a rocker becomes old doesn't mean that they've forgotten the fun of jamming together.
