RELEASED: 2 February 2004 The Scissor Sisters are a weird mob and difficult to pigeonhole into any one genre. They've been described as "glam rock", they're apparently named after a lesbian sex act, their lead singer gets at least half-naked at every opportunity and they had the audacity to do a falsetto disco remake of a Pink Floyd song. With such colourful pedigree it's little wonder "Scissor Sisters" was the biggest selling album in the UK in 2004! Over 15 months "Laura", "Comfortably Numb", "Take Your Mama", "Mary" and "Filthy/Gorgeous" were released as singles from the eponymous debut. None of them sounded slightly alike, yet all of them - like the rest of the album - were sheer pop brilliance, from the disco of "Comfortably Numb" and sweeping sadness of "Return To Oz" to the voyeuristic "Lovers In The Backseat" and wonderfully weird "Tits On The Radio". And ten years later? "Comfortably Numb" and "Filthy/Gorgeous" show their age the most, purely by virtue of their dance-oriented style. At the same time, they're both so wonderfully unexpected that, in the end, the style hardly matters. There's not a single filler track here and "Scissor Sisters" is still a hoot from start to finish.
I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
