10 Pop Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark
1. Mr. Brightside - The Killers
There's a good case to be made that the Killers' Mr Brightside is one of the most beloved songs of the '00s. From wedding receptions to nostalgia trips whenever it comes on the radio, there's something about that opening guitar figure and Brandon Flowers' voice that gives people a flood of emotion every time the song starts playing. For all of the accolades that have been thrown its way though, there's a good chance that some people still don't pick up on the cheeky title here.
After Brandon talks about coming out of his cage, the whole song seems to be a little bit obsessed...and not in the right way. While you can technically call this a love song, most of the track reads much like an obsessive ex monitoring his old flame's every move. Even though there are moments where he talks about his girlfriend finding someone new, all he needs is a kiss between her and someone else to start reeling, picturing her going home with him at the end of the night and not being able to watch any further.
When you hit that chorus though, calling himself Mr. Brightside is pretty ironic, as Brandon tries to desperately to put on a happy face during the situation, knowing full well that his relationship is probably over. Then again, if the stalking of your ex is giving off vibes of the song Every Breath You Take, there might be a reason why you got left on your ass like this.
