10 Pop Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark
2. Hey Ya - OutKast
After the massive success of Stankonia, it was becoming clear that both Andre 3000 and Big Boi were starting to grow apart. Though they were never fighting or on bad terms by any stretch, they were definitely not on the same wavelength in terms of musical influences, and Speakeboxxxx/The Love Below may as well just be the first two solo albums they made just smushed together onto a double record. Andre was moving much further away from rap, but that didn't mean that the pop flavor was going to be any easier to swallow.
If you go through the main melody of Hey Ya, you can grasp onto most of the basics of it pretty quickly, with Andre talking about his girl not messing around with anybody because she loves him so much. Before the backing singers come in with that incredible hook though, Andre starts to show us his hand, saying how he admits that love isn't really there and he sees them being together as just going with the flow, almost to just not have hangups about being single.
Once you get to the breakdown though, that's where he really starts going in hard on everything, saying that the modern idea of love is completely gone and since nothing is forever, love is bound to fade away too. By then, we've already submitted to the song, and Andre even breaks the fourth wall by saying that most of us just want to dance instead of listen to what he has to say. You may come for the groove, but you're in for the lecture of a lifetime when you actually do the deep dive here.
