9. Linkin Park

Beginning a list of pop stars with the one-two punch of Avril Lavigne and Linkin Park may seem a bit far-fetched, but the latter has had plenty of mainstream exposure with their recent crossover hits. Linkin Park is no longer the nu-metal imitators they appeared to be back in 2000. Now they're the hard rock version of toast: simple, consistent, and easily digestible.

Despite frequent, drastic changes in their sound, occasional side projects, and the fact that most people can't name a Linkin Park song from the last decade, the band has managed to be a radio staple for fifteen years.

Wait...FIFTEEN YEARS? From the guys who gave us these bits of lyrical genius in their first hit single?

Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up when I'm talking to you. Shut up. Shut up. Shut uuuuuuuuuup. 'Cause I'm about to break.

While it's wonderful that they surpassed the likes of Limp Bizkit, breaking away from their nu-metal shackles to forge a slightly more timeless sound, it's also hard to believe these guys ever rose to bigger prominence than Powerman 5000 and Alien Ant Farm.
